Chennai, Oct 08: Geri Care, India’s pioneer in integrated elderly healthcare organised Across the Table, a thoughtful intergenerational initiative that brought senior citizens and young volunteers together for one-on-one conversations at Kaylir Canteen, Mylapore. By pairing participants (elderly & the young) who had never met before, the event created an opportunity for stories, experiences and perspectives to be exchanged across generations, leading to new friendships, deeper understanding and connections that extended beyond the evening itself.
For one attendee, what began as a casual interaction quickly evolved into a memorable exchange. The activity began with icebreakers, games around Chennai’s history and cinema, along with delicious South Indian specialties, fostering a warm space for intergenerational connection. Through candid conversations, participants shared stories and life experiences, with several interactions extending beyond the event into new friendships and lasting bonds.
The senior citizen, Ms Megalai Senthil Kumar, said, “I came expecting a pleasant evening and I left with a new friendship and a story I will remember for a long time. It was heartening to see how a simple conversation could bridge generations and create such genuine connections.”
The young participant, Mr Avinaash, said, “I was curious about what we would talk about for over an hour, but the conversation flowed effortlessly. What surprised me most was how naturally the interaction unfolded, making it feel less like an event and more like reconnecting with someone I had known for years.”
Mr Anand Subramanian, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, Geri Care, said, “Geri Care’s Across the Table was built on a simple belief that meaningful human connections are essential to healthy ageing. It was heartening to see complete strangers come together, share their experiences and leave with new friendships. The warmth and enthusiasm we witnessed reaffirmed the power of conversations in bringing generations closer.”
At a time when different generations have fewer opportunities to engage meaningfully with one another, Across the Table demonstrated that genuine connections can emerge through something as simple as sharing a table and a conversation. By creating a welcoming space for listening, learning and understanding, the initiative reinforced the importance of social connection and community engagement while enabling participants to gain fresh perspectives from one another’s lived experiences.
