Kochi, 05th October 2026: Aftercare is as important as treatment in cancer care, experts said as AQCCON 2026, the cancer conclave organised by Aster International Institute of Oncology concluded. Survivorship emerged as a major focus. Experts said patients who have been cured still need close attention to sleep, immunity and emotional wellbeing, and a dedicated, structured regime for survivors is essential. Aftercare, they noted, is as important as treatment itself.
The conclave also drew attention to the growing burden of cancer among the elderly. Older patients often live with other health conditions that influence how they respond to treatment, so curing them takes more than drugs, surgery or radiation. Lifestyle improvement, physiotherapy, counselling and psychological support all contribute to better outcomes. Many elderly patients also lack social support, which adds to the challenge.
Experts emphasised that geriatric oncology works best as a team effort, with geriatricians, oncologists and primary care providers working together. New tools such as wearable devices are being explored to support elderly patients.
Self-management was another element. With virtual access to their cancer care team, patients can share any concerns as they arise, so the team can respond early and keep them on track.
The conclave concluded with the view that cancer care should cover diagnosis, treatment and recovery, with patients and families supported at every step.
