Anandapur, Kolkata, 28 September, 2026: Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, successfully diagnosed and treated a hidden, life-threatening heart condition in a 75–year–old woman who was originally admitted for routine clearance ahead of a planned robot-aided gallbladder surgery. The case was led by Dr. Shuvanan Ray, Director & Chief Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur.
The patient had presented to the hospital for a routine check-up to clear her for a robotic gallbladder surgery. Before coming to Fortis, she had visited multiple other hospitals where doctors told her she only had a moderate heart valve problem known as aortic stenosis. During post-admission assessment, doctors noticed the patient was experiencing breathing issues. Trusting clinical intuition despite reassuring routine reports, the team ordered for an advanced heart scan (CT aortic valve calcium score). The scan revealed severe, life-threatening heart valve narrowing that posed a catastrophic risk.
Moving forward with the gallbladder surgery despite a hidden heart problem would have been life-threatening for the patient. Doctors decided to postpone the gallbladder operation and instead performed a modern, minimally invasive heart procedure called TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation). The patient successfully underwent the heart procedure and was discharged after one week, following a smooth and complication-free recovery.
