Mumbai, Sep 23: Merck, a science and technology company, launched the ‘Science Behind Water’ campaign, an initiative designed to build awareness around the importance of water quality, safety, hygiene and conservation in safeguarding public health and building a more sustainable future. The campaign was launched at Bharat Ratnam, Mega CFC, Mumbai, in collaboration with the Bureau of Indian Standards in the presence of students from four government schools.

“Water safety touches every aspect of our lives, making awareness and informed actions essential from an early age. Through this campaign, Merck aims to help people understand the science behind water quality, safety and hygiene, while highlighting how scientific innovation can contribute to achieving purer, safer water,” said Dhananjay Singh, Managing Director, Life Science business of Merck. “By combining scientific demonstrations, interactive learning and storytelling, we hope to spark curiosity and inspire students to look at water not just as a vital resource, but as a shared responsibility, one whose quality and safety require greater awareness and collective action.”
At the Science Behind Water launch, 160 students took part in an interactive learning experience, focused on the science of water purity, quality, safety and hygiene. Supported by SPARK, Merck’s global employee volunteer program, 30 volunteers helped facilitate hands-on scientific experiments, demonstrations and quizzes that enabled students to understand how safe water practices can be incorporated into everyday life. The activities also encouraged students to apply their learning, strengthen their understanding of water safety and conservation, and engage with the subject in a practical and relatable way.
A key highlight of the programme was the launch of the Merck x Tinkle comic book, which uses storytelling to communicate messages around water quality, safety, and hygiene. Designed for young audiences, it simplifies complex scientific concepts into relatable stories. The comic book was distributed to participating students, extending learning beyond the event and reminding students to apply these messages in their daily lives.
Science Behind Water is the third instalment of the “Science Behind” series initiated by Merck. Science Behind Vaccines, launched in 2023, explored the journey of immunizations from laboratory research and microbial analysis up to large-scale production and public health delivery. Science Behind Food Safety launched in 2024, focused on the role of microbiological analysis, testing protocols, and regulatory frameworks to ensure consumer health and safety.
