IRVINE, Calif.—August 10, 2026—The makers of the iSharing app, a real-time GPS phone tracker designed for family safety and location sharing, today announced the launch of “Meetup,” a new feature that enables users to share locations and meet in groups without adding each other as permanent friends. The feature is meant for people who meet for casual activities like running, hiking, and sports with changing memberships, as well as one-off gatherings such as festivals and tailgating parties. It is also suitable for recurring groups such as youth sports leagues. Hosts can easily invite up to 30 participants via QR code or link across both iOS and Android.
“You don’t always know an area, or the people you’re meeting there, well enough to want to stay connected long-term,” explained Yongjae Chuh, CEO of iSharing. “Meetup makes it easy to arrange a meeting point and find each other for that one moment, especially somewhere unfamiliar, without any of it lasting longer than it needs to.”
The main advantage of Meetup goes beyond temporary location sharing. The feature enables casual, low-commitment sharing. This is particularly useful in cases such as running clubs where membership is frequently changing. There is no need to manage a growing, ever-changing friend list just to coordinate one-off or recurring sessions with shifting members. “People often want the convenience of sharing location,” Chuh added, “but hesitate because permanent sharing feels too personal or like too much commitment. Meetup removes that hesitation by letting people share only for the moment they need it, with no lasting connection required afterward. This reflects two core privacy principles: data minimization (location data isn’t retained after the event) and user control (people share their location for a limited time only, without adding a contact or exchanging personal information).”
Meetup makes it possible for users to plan ahead, not just react. They set an exact date and time window in advance, and have the option to make it recurring for regular groups. The host can approve other users joining the Meetup. The host can also set the duration of the Meetup, rather than be locked into one standard time window. Each Meetup gets a title, with the ability to add notes. As a result, recurring groups can tell sessions apart at a glance instead of digging through a list of unlabeled entries. The app deletes location data once the event has occurred.
