New Delhi, Sep 8: India’s life insurance industry is expected to maintain its growth momentum in FY27, with retail annualised premium equivalent (APE) projected to rise by around 11-12 per cent. Private insurers are expected to remain the main drivers of expansion as demand for protection and long-term financial planning continues to increase.

The sector has started the financial year on a positive note. New business premiums rose 16.6 per cent year-on-year in the first quarter of FY27, with private insurers contributing strongly to the increase and further strengthening their position in the market.

Life Insurance Sector Set for 11-12 pc Growth in FY27 as Private Players Drive Expansion

Recent industry performance also shows continued momentum. Life insurers recorded a 33 per cent year-on-year increase in new business premiums in August, although much of the growth came from single-premium and group insurance products.

The expected expansion of the sector is important for households as well as the broader economy. Life insurance provides financial protection to families against the loss of an earning member, while long-term policies can support savings, retirement planning and financial stability.

Growing insurance coverage can also help households manage unexpected financial shocks without significantly disrupting their savings or day-to-day spending. For businesses, wider insurance adoption can strengthen financial resilience and support long-term investment decisions.

Private insurers are increasingly expanding their distribution networks, digital services and product offerings, helping bring insurance to a wider customer base. The growing presence of private players is also encouraging greater competition and innovation across the industry.

The sector’s expansion is expected to create opportunities for insurance distributors, banks, financial technology platforms and other related services. Greater digital adoption is likely to make policy purchase, premium payments and claims-related services more accessible to consumers.

With rising financial awareness, improving distribution and continued demand for protection and long-term savings, the life insurance industry is expected to remain an important part of India’s financial services sector in FY27.
