Kolkata, Sep 7: West Bengal is witnessing a steady rise in dengue infections, with more than 500 fresh cases reported across the state in the past week. The increase has put health authorities on alert as the monsoon season continues.
The latest rise has been reported from several districts, with Murshidabad emerging as one of the most affected areas. The district recorded 96 new cases in the past seven days, taking its total infections this year to around 870.
Kolkata has also reported a rise in infections, with 62 new cases recorded during the week. The city has reported more than 400 dengue cases so far this year.
Dengue cases have been increasing gradually since April. Health Department data showed around 770 cases by the end of April, which increased to nearly 1,950 by July and crossed 3,900 by the end of August. The latest weekly rise has pushed the overall count further upward.
The increase comes during a period when frequent rainfall and stagnant water can create favourable breeding conditions for dengue-carrying mosquitoes. Health officials are therefore focusing on surveillance, testing and measures to prevent mosquito breeding.
For residents, simple precautions such as removing stagnant water from homes and nearby areas, keeping surroundings clean and seeking medical attention for persistent fever can help reduce the risk of complications.
The rising number of cases also highlights the importance of early detection. Timely testing and treatment can help patients recover faster and reduce the chances of severe illness.
With the monsoon still active, continued monitoring and public participation will be important to control the spread of dengue across West Bengal. Strong coordination between health authorities, local bodies and communities can help prevent further transmission in the weeks ahead.
