Sep 03: As smartphones, laptops, televisions, electric vehicles, and household appliances become an integral part of modern life, electronic waste is emerging as one of the world’s fastest-growing waste streams. Yet, every discarded electronic device contains more than just obsolete technology—it contains valuable metals and critical minerals that can be recovered and reintroduced into the economy. The future of ewaste management is therefore not simply about recycling; it is about urban mining.

Urban mining refers to the recovery of precious and critical materials from discarded electronic products instead of extracting them from natural mines. Gold, silver, copper, palladium, lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare earth elements found in electronic devices are becoming increasingly valuable as the world transitions towards electric mobility, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. In many cases, discarded electronics contain higher concentrations of precious metals than naturally occurring mineral ores, making ewaste one of the richest “above-ground mines” available today.

Countries across the world have already recognised this opportunity. During the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Japan manufactured its gold, silver, and bronze medals using metals recovered from discarded mobile phones, computers, and other electronic devices collected across the country. The initiative showcased how urban mining can reduce dependence on virgin mining while promoting responsible resource recovery.

Similarly, Sweden has encouraged repair and refurbishment by providing incentives that extend the life of electronic products before they enter the recycling stream. Across the European Union, Extended Producer Responsibility regulations require manufacturers to finance the collection and environmentally sound recycling of electronic waste, ensuring valuable materials remain within the economy rather than being lost in landfills.

India, now among the world’s largest generators of ewaste, has a unique opportunity to become a global leader in urban mining. As the demand for critical minerals continues to rise, recovering these resources from discarded electronics can reduce import dependence, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and support the country’s clean energy transition. At the same time, scientific recycling can prevent hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants from contaminating soil, water, and air.

Improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries also presents a growing challenge. Batteries discarded with household waste can trigger fires during collection and transportation, while valuable minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and nickel are permanently lost. Establishing efficient collection systems and directing ewaste to authorised recyclers can transform this environmental challenge into a strategic economic opportunity.
