New Delhi, Sep 1: Indian Railways has approved a ₹233 crore project to install modern electronic signalling systems at 21 stations in Bihar, in a move aimed at making train operations safer, smoother and more reliable.
The project covers stations under the Samastipur Division of East Central Railway and will replace older signalling arrangements with Electronic Interlocking (EI) technology. The computer-based system will help railway staff manage train routes, signals and track movements with greater accuracy.
The upgrade is expected to improve the reliability of signalling, reduce the chances of technical failures and allow quicker restoration when problems occur. It will also support more efficient movement of passenger and freight trains, particularly as rail traffic continues to grow.
The modern signalling system will provide an important foundation for the wider adoption of Kavach, India’s indigenous automatic train protection system. The move is part of Indian Railways’ larger effort to replace ageing signalling infrastructure with modern technology and strengthen safety across busy routes.
For passengers, the project is expected to bring long-term benefits through safer train movement and more dependable railway operations. It also reflects the Railways’ continuing focus on using technology to improve infrastructure and service reliability.
The investment in Bihar’s signalling network is therefore expected to strengthen railway safety while preparing the region’s infrastructure for the next generation of train operations.
