New Delhi, Aug 31: India’s semiconductor ambitions are beginning to create opportunities beyond chip manufacturing, with the country’s emerging semiconductor ecosystem expected to generate 50,000–60,000 direct jobs, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said.
The projected employment growth comes as India steps up efforts to establish a complete semiconductor ecosystem covering chip design, manufacturing, assembly, testing, packaging, research and development.
The expansion could open new career opportunities for engineers, technicians, researchers and other skilled professionals. It is also expected to create demand for specialised talent in areas such as semiconductor design, equipment operations, testing, maintenance and advanced manufacturing.
The development is significant for India’s technology and manufacturing ambitions. For years, the global semiconductor industry has been concentrated in a few major manufacturing hubs. India is now seeking to build greater domestic capabilities and become a stronger participant in the global electronics supply chain.
The emerging industry could also create indirect employment across logistics, equipment, construction, component manufacturing, research institutions and other supporting sectors. This means the economic impact of semiconductor investments could extend well beyond individual chip facilities.
