New Delhi, Aug 28: More than 7 crore income tax returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year 2026-27 have been filed so far, highlighting the growing adoption of digital tax services and continued compliance among taxpayers.

With the filing deadline approaching on August 31 for eligible taxpayers, the Income Tax Department has advised those who are yet to submit their returns to complete the process at the earliest and avoid a last-minute rush.

7 Crore ITR Filings Mark Strong Push for Digital Tax Compliance Ahead of Deadline

The latest filing milestone reflects the increasing use of online tax services in India. The e-filing system has made it easier for taxpayers to submit returns, access tax-related information and complete compliance requirements from anywhere.

The August 31 deadline applies to certain taxpayers, including individuals and entities with business or professional income whose accounts are not required to be audited. Depending on their taxpayer category and income profile, they may need to use forms such as ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 or ITR-7.

Taxpayers are advised to carefully review their income details, deductions, investments and other relevant information before submitting their returns. They should also ensure that the return is successfully e-verified after filing, as verification is an important step in completing the filing process.

Filing early can help taxpayers avoid technical difficulties or delays that may arise when a large number of people attempt to use the portal close to the deadline. It also provides additional time to identify and correct any mistakes in the return.

The crossing of the 7-crore mark points to the scale of India’s income-tax filing system and the steady shift towards technology-driven tax administration. Increased digital participation is also helping taxpayers complete compliance requirements more conveniently while enabling authorities to manage a large volume of returns efficiently.

With only a few days remaining before the applicable deadline, taxpayers who have not yet filed their AY 2026-27 returns are encouraged to complete the process on time and ensure that all required information is accurate and properly verified.
