The unions are demanding the implementation of a five-day banking week, changes to the existing Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) system, and action on various pension-related matters.

Five-day banking remains one of the major demands. The proposal has been pending despite its inclusion in earlier agreements between the unions and the Indian Banks’ Association. The unions want the government to move ahead with its implementation.

The UFBU has also raised objections to the current PLI framework and is seeking discussions to address differences over its implementation. Pension-related demands are another important part of the unions’ charter.

If the strike goes ahead, banking services, particularly at public sector banks, could be affected. September 11 falls on a Friday and is followed by the weekend, which could extend the impact on banking operations in several parts of the country.

The UFBU has also announced further industrial action, including a three-day strike from September 28 to 30, and has warned of an indefinite strike from October 26 if the outstanding issues remain unresolved.

The proposed strikes are aimed at pressing authorities to return to negotiations and find a settlement on the issues raised by bank employees and officers.
