Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 24: Kerala is preparing for Onam celebrations amid the possibility of rain, with a yellow weather alert issued for eight districts as the festival season gets underway.

The weather warning covers Kasaragod, Kannur, Thrissur, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Ernakulam. Residents in these areas are likely to experience periods of rain, with some places potentially receiving heavier showers.
The warning comes just as Kerala enters the main days of its Onam celebrations. Thiruvonam, the most important day of the festival, falls on August 26, when families traditionally come together for the Onam feast and communities organise cultural events and celebrations.
The possibility of rain could affect some outdoor programmes and travel plans, particularly in areas expecting heavier showers. People attending events have been advised to keep track of local weather conditions and take necessary precautions.
The weather is also being closely watched in agricultural areas, where rainfall can support soil moisture and water availability. At the same time, intense showers may lead to temporary waterlogging, traffic disruptions and difficult road conditions in some locations.
Despite the forecast, the festive spirit remains strong across Kerala, with families making preparations for traditional celebrations, including the Onam sadya and cultural programmes.
