Mumbai, Aug 21: Indian equity markets closed Friday’s session on a stable note, with the benchmark indices showing limited movement as investors remained watchful of global developments, elevated crude oil prices and higher bond yields.

Indian Stock Market Ends Week Steady Amid Global Uncertainty

The Sensex gained 3.11 points to settle at 77,540.83, while the Nifty rose 20.15 points, or 0.08 per cent, to close at 24,252. The subdued finish reflected a cautious approach among investors as global markets continued to navigate geopolitical and economic uncertainties.

For the second consecutive week, both benchmark indices ended lower. The Nifty declined around 0.5 per cent, while the Sensex slipped about 0.6 per cent during the week. Rising crude prices and higher global bond yields remained important factors influencing investor sentiment.

Despite the cautious tone in the large-cap segment, broader markets showed resilience. Investors continued to find opportunities in selected mid-cap and small-cap stocks, while private banking shares remained among the stronger areas of the market.

Sectoral performance was mixed, with investors maintaining a selective approach. Concerns over higher energy costs continued to weigh on some sectors, while financial and metal stocks provided support to the broader market.

Global crude oil prices remained a key concern. Brent crude was trading above $90 a barrel and was on course for a second consecutive weekly gain amid continuing uncertainty over energy supplies and tensions involving the US and Iran.

Higher global bond yields also remained on investors’ radar as they can increase borrowing costs and reduce the attractiveness of emerging-market assets. This has contributed to a more cautious approach among global investors towards riskier markets.

From a technical perspective, the 24,000–24,200 zone remains an important support area for the Nifty, while the 24,300–24,400 range could act as an immediate hurdle. A sustained move above this resistance zone may improve market sentiment and create room for further gains.

Overall, Indian equities demonstrated resilience despite a challenging global environment. With domestic investors continuing to participate selectively, market direction in the coming sessions is likely to depend on crude oil movements, global bond yields, foreign investment flows and developments in the geopolitical environment.

The steady Friday close highlights the underlying strength of the domestic market while investors remain prepared to respond to changing global cues.
