New Delhi, Aug 21: The India-European Union Free Trade Agreement is being viewed as a major opportunity to deepen economic ties and create new possibilities for businesses on both sides. Trade representatives from Finland and Lithuania have welcomed the agreement, describing it as a potential boost for trade, investment and business cooperation.

India-EU Trade Deal Opens a New Chapter for Businesses and Economic Growth

The India-EU negotiations were concluded in January 2026, marking an important milestone in the relationship between India and the European Union. The agreement is designed to make trade more predictable and give businesses greater access to one of the world’s largest markets.

For Indian exporters, the agreement provides preferential access across 96.8 per cent of tariff lines, covering 99.5 per cent of India’s exports to the EU. The benefits are particularly significant for labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, apparel, leather, footwear, gems and jewellery, marine products, handicrafts and engineering goods.

The pact is also expected to create opportunities in services. India has secured market access in 144 services subsectors, including IT and IT-enabled services, professional services, business services and education. The framework also aims to make movement for skilled professionals and business travellers more predictable.

For smaller companies and startups, easier access to European markets could open the door to new customers, partnerships and investment. The agreement also includes provisions aimed at supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and helping them become part of global value chains.

European businesses could also find greater opportunities in India as trade barriers are reduced and the business environment becomes more predictable. This could encourage fresh investment, technology partnerships and stronger links between Indian and European companies.

The agreement is particularly important at a time when businesses worldwide are dealing with changing supply chains and economic uncertainty. Stronger India-EU trade ties could give companies on both sides more options for sourcing, manufacturing and expanding into new markets.

With its focus on goods, services, digital trade, small businesses and investment, the India-EU FTA has the potential to go beyond traditional trade and build a broader economic partnership that supports jobs, innovation and long-term business growth.
