New Delhi, Aug 21: India is steadily strengthening its position in the global energy market as the country expands its oil refining capacity towards 300 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA). Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said the expansion will help India meet rising domestic demand while supporting its role as a reliable supplier of refined fuels to other countries.

India currently operates 23 refineries with capacity of nearly 270 MMTPA. The planned expansion is expected to give the country greater flexibility in managing changing global energy conditions and strengthen its ability to supply petroleum products to international markets.
India’s refining sector is also becoming more closely connected with petrochemicals, biofuels and emerging clean-energy technologies. This wider approach is helping the industry move beyond conventional fuel production and create new opportunities for manufacturing, investment and exports.
The country has already emerged as an important exporter of refined petroleum products, supplying more than 50 countries. The growing capacity and modernisation of refineries could further improve India’s competitiveness in global energy trade.
The expansion is also taking place alongside India’s push for cleaner fuels. Green hydrogen, biofuels and natural gas are becoming an increasingly important part of the country’s energy strategy, creating a pathway that combines energy security with the transition towards cleaner sources.
India’s expanding refining network therefore represents more than an increase in processing capacity. It is strengthening the country’s energy security, industrial capabilities and global trade position, while creating a stronger foundation for the next phase of India’s energy growth.
