New Delhi, Aug 21: Researchers have reported cases of severe vivax malaria in Tripura, highlighting the need for better diagnosis and timely treatment of the disease.

Severe Vivax Malaria Cases Reported in Tripura, Raising Health Concerns

A study conducted over 18 months found 11 severe cases among 223 patients infected with xPlasmodium viva. The findings challenge the common belief that vivax malaria generally causes only mild illness.

Researchers also found that some infections may not be detected through routine testing methods, particularly when parasite levels in the blood are low.

The study examined malaria cases in Tripura, a region where the disease continues to pose a public health challenge. Researchers noted that severe infections can be associated with problems such as low blood counts and other complications.

The findings underline the importance of early diagnosis, proper monitoring and timely treatment for malaria patients.

Researchers have suggested strengthening diagnostic methods and surveillance systems to identify infections that may otherwise be missed through routine testing.

The study also highlights the need for greater awareness among healthcare workers about the possibility of severe complications from P. vivax malaria.

The researchers said improved diagnosis and patient care could help reduce the risk of serious illness and support ongoing efforts to control malaria in Northeast India.
