Vedaranyam, August 20, 2026: Vedaranyam’s salt industry in Tamil Nadu is witnessing a strong recovery this season, with intense summer heat helping producers achieve around 85 per cent of their annual production target of 1.75 lakh tonnes.

From Heat to Harvest: Vedaranyam Salt Producers Race Towards Annual Goal

Salt production is carried out across nearly 3,000 acres in Agasthiyampalli, Kodiyakkadu and Kadinalvayal, where around 800 small-scale producers depend on the seasonal industry.

The production process depends heavily on sunlight and dry weather. Seawater is brought into shallow salt pans, where the water gradually evaporates under the heat. As evaporation continues, salt crystals form and are collected by workers before being piled, dried and prepared for transportation.

Intermittent rain affected production during the early part of the season. However, prolonged hot and dry weather from May onwards has accelerated evaporation and helped producers improve their output significantly.

The current season is a major improvement over last year, when heavy rainfall reduced production to only around 40 per cent of the normal target. With the northeast monsoon expected around October, producers are hopeful of completing this year’s target before the season comes to an end.

Vedaranyam normally produces between 1.7 lakh and 2 lakh tonnes of salt annually. Around 60 per cent of the production is edible salt, while the remaining 40 per cent is industrial salt. The produce is supplied across Tamil Nadu and to markets in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

The intense heat has also changed the working routine in the salt pans. Workers often begin as early as 3 a.m. to collect and heap salt during the cooler morning hours before temperatures rise during the day.

Salt prices vary according to demand and production levels, with Vedaranyam salt currently averaging around Rs 1,000 per tonne. Producers can harvest around 150 tonnes per acre in a year under favourable conditions.

With nearly 15 per cent of the annual target still to be achieved, the industry is now closely watching the weather. Continued sunshine and limited rainfall could allow Vedaranyam’s salt producers to finish the season on a strong note.
