Gwalior, August 18, 2026: The Gwalior-Chambal region is set to receive a major boost to rail connectivity with the inauguration of the Kailaras-Sabalgarh-Birpur gauge-converted rail section and the extension of the Gwalior-Kailaras train service to Birpur.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the upgraded section and flagged off the extended train service, marking a significant step towards improving passenger connectivity and supporting economic activity across the region.
The gauge conversion project is expected to benefit residents of more than 100 villages across Morena and Sheopur districts by improving access to rail services and strengthening connections with major urban centres.
Vaishnaw said the upgraded connectivity would provide new opportunities for local communities and contribute to the development of the Gwalior-Chambal region. The project is also expected to facilitate smoother movement of passengers and goods while supporting regional trade and economic activity.
The Railway Minister said work on the Birpur-Seroni Road and Seroni Road-Sheopur Kalan sections is almost complete, further strengthening the railway network in the region.
The developments are part of broader efforts by Indian Railways to expand and modernise infrastructure, improve connectivity and provide better services to passengers across Madhya Pradesh.
Vaishnaw also highlighted the expansion of employment opportunities in Indian Railways, stating that more than 5.54 lakh personnel have been recruited since 2014.
He further said the railway budget allocation for Madhya Pradesh has increased nearly 24-fold, from ₹632 crore during 2009-14 to ₹15,188 crore in 2026-27. The increased investment and ongoing infrastructure projects are expected to strengthen Madhya Pradesh’s rail network and support long-term regional development.
