Bhubaneswar, Aug 18: Odisha witnessed intense rainfall over the past 24 hours, with Mayurbhanj emerging as the worst-affected district as several areas recorded very heavy showers, prompting authorities to remain on alert.

Odisha Under Rain Watch as Mayurbhanj Gets 273 mm in 24 Hours

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), three locations recorded very heavy rainfall, while 22 stations reported heavy rain.

Bahalda in Mayurbhanj received the highest rainfall at 273 mm, followed by Rairangpur with 180 mm. Jharbandh in Bargarh recorded 150 mm.

Heavy rain was also reported from several other parts of Mayurbhanj and Sundargarh. Jamda received 124 mm, Bangiriposhi 112.4 mm, Balisankara 115 mm and Tensa 112.8 mm.

Several locations in Sundargarh, Bargarh, Sambalpur and Jharsuguda also recorded substantial rainfall, adding to the wet conditions across the region.

The continuing downpour has raised concerns about waterlogging, local flooding and disruption to road connectivity in vulnerable areas. Residents in low-lying locations have been advised to remain cautious, particularly during periods of intense rainfall.

The rainfall could benefit agricultural areas and replenish local water sources, but prolonged heavy showers may also put pressure on drainage systems and affect normal life.

District authorities have been asked to closely monitor the situation and respond quickly to any weather-related emergencies. People have also been advised to follow official weather alerts and instructions from local administrations.

With more rain expected in parts of Odisha, the focus remains on keeping vulnerable communities safe while monitoring conditions on the ground.
