The projection places India above the expected Asia-Pacific average of 50 per cent, reflecting the increasing presence of 5G services and compatible devices across the country.

The growth of 5G is expected to have an impact beyond faster mobile internet. Greater access to high-speed and reliable connectivity could support businesses, digital services and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.

For consumers, the benefits could include quicker access to online services, improved video and communication services and greater opportunities to participate in the digital economy. Businesses could use 5G-enabled technologies for automation, connected equipment, logistics and other applications.

However, wider adoption will depend not only on network availability but also on the affordability of 5G-enabled devices and services. Digital skills, consumer awareness and confidence in online safety will also influence how effectively people use the technology.

The expansion of 5G is taking place alongside broader efforts to improve digital connectivity in rural and underserved areas. Programmes focused on broadband access and digital literacy are expected to help more people participate in the digital economy.

Cybersecurity is another important consideration as connectivity expands. With more personal, financial and business activities moving online, stronger safeguards for data and digital identities will become increasingly important.

India is also preparing for the next generation of wireless technology, with work on a 6G roadmap already underway. The development of domestic capabilities in telecommunications and related technologies could further strengthen the country’s digital infrastructure.

The projected rise in 5G adoption could therefore have implications for consumers, businesses and the wider economy. The key challenge will be ensuring that the benefits of improved connectivity are accessible across different regions and income groups.

If affordability, digital skills and online safety develop alongside network availability, 5G could become an important foundation for India’s digital economy over the coming years.
