Mumbai, Aug 17: Dabur Red Toothpaste has launched ‘Desh Ke Lal’, a new brand campaign that takes a contemporary look at the young Indians shaping the country today – confident, self-aware, expressive and increasingly empowered to make choices that reflect who they are.

At the centre of the campaign is an original ‘Desh Ke Lal’ anthem, built around the recurring refrain, “Yeh hi toh Desh Ke Lal hain.” Through humour, music and a language rooted in contemporary youth culture, the song reflects the attitudes that define its protagonists – they ask questions, speak their minds, take responsibility, come together and have their own ideas of what success should look like.

Lines such as “Askin’ questions, ain’t no crime” and “We define what be success” give the anthem its voice, presenting the ‘Desh Ke Lal’ of today through characteristics and cultural cues that feel familiar to the generation it speaks about.

Taking the idea beyond the music video, Dabur Red has extended the campaign into social media with the ‘Pass the Desh Ke Lal Hook Step Challenge’, inspired by the anthem’s signature choreography. The challenge will unfold on Instagram through Reels, inviting creators and audiences to recreate the signature step, tag Dabur Red and nominate the next person they want to see take it forward.

The challenge begins with one participant performing their version of the hook step and nominating the next person to take it forward. Each new participant picks up the movement, adds their own interpretation and passes the challenge on, creating a chain that grows from one person to the next.

Rather than centering the format around individual performance alone, the nomination mechanic turns it into a chain of participation and appreciation, with every person bringing another ‘Desh Ke Lal’ into the conversation.

The hookstep format is also designed to make UGC a central part of the campaign. Every nomination has the potential to result in a new Reel, a new interpretation of the hook step and another participant entering the chain, thereby staying true to the spirit of self-expression and giving each participant the freedom to make the movement their own rather than follow rigid boundaries. As the challenge moves from one account to another, the growing volume of creator- and audience-led content can extend the campaign beyond Dabur Red’s own social channels, widening organic discovery and creating a multiplier effect that builds the potential for virality.

Speaking about the campaign, Prashant Agarwal, Head of Marketing – Oral Care, Dabur India Ltd, said,

“For a brand like Dabur Red, which has built a strong connection with Indian consumers over the years, staying relevant across generations also means continuously understanding how evolving consumers think and express themselves. This new ‘Desh Ke Lal’ campaign featuring youth brings that philosophy alive. The confidence to challenge, speak up and choose your own path is at the heart of this new generation consumer. That’s exactly why we are celebrating through this video on Independence Day. And the hook-step challenge gives people a way to make that belief their own.”

Conceptualised and executed by Kandid Kanvass, the campaign brings together an anthem-led film and a participatory social format, allowing the central thought to move from brand communication into audience expression.

Saarthak Juneja, Creative and Director, Co-founder, Kandid Kanvass, said,

“When we started ‘Desh Ke Lal’, we kept coming back to one question: who are the Desh Ke Lal today? We realised it’s not about what they do. It’s about how they think. They question. They speak up. They use humour to say what they mean.Their choices and definitions of success are their own. So we wanted the song to have their vibe, and not like a brand talking to them. The hook step gives everyone an action, something to ‘do’ instead of just passively consuming.”

With ‘Desh Ke Lal’, Dabur Red brings together music, youth culture and social participation to create a campaign that can continue to take on new interpretations as more people make the anthem and its signature hook step their own.

The campaign will be amplified across Dabur Red’s digital and social media platforms, with the Reel-led challenge creating an open invitation for audiences to join the ‘Desh Ke Lal’ chain and keep it moving forward.
