New Delhi: The Government of India has stepped up its welfare, healthcare and social security interventions for senior citizens, with millions of beneficiaries covered through key central schemes over the past three years.
According to government data, 10,00,456 beneficiaries were covered under the Atal Vayo Abhyuday Yojana (AVYAY) during the last three years. In addition, 2,21,30,687 beneficiaries were covered under the National Social Assistance Programme (NSAP), while 28,29,63,879 beneficiaries benefited under the National Programme of Health Care for the Elderly (NPHCE).
The scale of coverage highlights the government’s focus on addressing the financial, healthcare and social needs of India’s growing elderly population. The programmes seek to provide support ranging from social assistance and healthcare services to institutional care and welfare facilities.
Under the Integrated Programme for Senior Citizens (IPSrC), the government provides grants-in-aid to eligible Non-Governmental Organisations and voluntary organisations for the operation and maintenance of Senior Citizens Homes and Continuous Care Homes.
These facilities are intended particularly for indigent senior citizens and provide essential services including shelter, nutrition, Medicare and entertainment free of cost. The programme aims to ensure that elderly people who lack adequate family or financial support can access basic care and a dignified living environment.
The government’s multi-pronged approach reflects the increasing importance of senior citizen welfare within India’s broader social security framework. With longer life expectancy and changing family structures, access to affordable healthcare, financial assistance and institutional support is becoming increasingly important.
The continued expansion of beneficiary coverage under welfare and healthcare programmes also points to the growing role of public policy in creating a more inclusive social security ecosystem for India’s elderly population. For senior citizens, the focus is not only on healthcare but also on dignity, security, social inclusion and quality of life.
