Prakriya Hospitals completes first liver transplant, expands advanced hepatobiliary care

Bengaluru, 03 August Prakriya Hospitals has announced the successful completion of its first liver transplant surgery, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s journey of delivering advanced, life-saving care in Bengaluru. The achievement reflects the clinical strength of the team, the hospital’s advanced infrastructure, and its commitment to providing compassionate, patient-centred treatment for complex hepatobiliary conditions.

The transplant was performed on Mr Sunil Gowda, 36, who had been suffering from chronic liver failure for more than a year. His condition had progressively deteriorated: he developed bilateral hepatic hydrothorax (fluid accumulation in the chest cavity), making breathing difficult; he experienced significant muscle mass loss (sarcopenia), ascites, severe fatigue, and struggled to sleep, walk, or carry out daily activities. With his health declining and options limited, he was listed for a transplant at Prakriya Hospitals. He subsequently received a suitable liver organ offer routed via the state’s allocation system, with the donor organ coordinated through NIMHANS.

The surgery was successful, and Mr Gowda is now recovering well under the close supervision of the transplant team at Prakriya Hospitals. His liver function has stabilized, and he has shown significant improvement in breathing, mobility, and overall energy levels since the procedure.

Sharing his thoughts on the milestone, Dr Rajegowda, HPB & Transplant Surgeon, said, “This successful liver transplant is a testament to the dedication, precision and seamless coordination of our entire transplant team. Chronic liver disease is common among people but most of them ignore it early stage and approach us at later stage when their health deteriorates, so people need bit awareness about liver conditions.”

Dr Srinivas Chirukuri, CEO and Director, Prakriya Hospitals, Bengaluru, added, “We are proud to reach this significant milestone at Prakriya Hospitals. This achievement reinforces our mission to bring advanced, life-saving surgical care closer to the community while upholding the highest standards of safety, quality and compassion.”

The surgery was supported by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anaesthetists, critical care specialists, nurses and allied healthcare professionals who worked together to ensure patient safety and seamless perioperative care. With this milestone, Prakriya Hospitals further strengthens its role in expanding access to advanced surgical services and advancing excellence in healthcare for the communities it serves.
