Toronto, July 4: JMIR Publications released a feature News and Perspectives story on digital mental health tools in its News and Perspectives section. In “Evaluating the Evidence Base for New Mental Health Tech With APA Labs”, JMIR Correspondent Simon Spichak speaks with Tanya Carlson, MBA, managing director of APA (American Psychological Association) Labs, on how their new initiative – the Digital Badge Program – is helping developers evaluate and improve their mental health applications.
The Growing Need for Safe Digital Care
With more people turning to AI chatbots and mobile applications for mental health support, ensuring that these tools are safe, effective, and secure is quickly becoming a priority. Many of the tools currently available are not purpose-built for clinical mental health care, raising concerns that they may not operate safely or could leak sensitive personal information to third parties. APA Labs launched the Digital Badge Program and the Digital Badge Solutions Library, addressing this issue in two ways: allowing consumers to make informed decisions about the mental health tool they choose, and providing developers feedback on their products.
Helping Developers Improve
A unique strength of the Digital Badge Program is its focus on continuous refinement. After the initial assessment (which analyzes products across key domains: regulation and safety, data protection and privacy, and usability and accessibility) developers receive a detailed gap analysis showing exactly how they scored and where weaknesses lie. This allows companies to address deficiencies, such as hidden risks in open-source AI models or insufficient data protection, before a final badge is issued. Carlson highlights this collaborative aspect: “Our goal is to have the best possible products. We are supportive of them taking our feedback, improving the product, and then earning that higher badge.” Products that meet the program’s proprietary criteria are awarded a bronze, silver, or gold badge and are listed in the public, open-access Digital Badge Solutions Library.
Leading with Science and Ethics
As users increasingly gravitate toward AI systems for their behavioural health, the APA hopes the Digital Badge Program will provide credible differentiation for high-quality apps. By establishing clear expectations around the responsible and ethical implementation of AI, the program aims to address knowledge gaps for well-intentioned developers. “We have a tremendous opportunity to leverage technology to address some of the persistent barriers to care,” Carlson states. “Leading with science and leading with the expectation of ethical implementation will allow us to ensure that these tools are built in the right way.”
