Chandak Group Transforms Mumbai’s Skyline with One of the City’s Tallest Murals on an SRA Tower

Mumbai, June 26: Coinciding with National Mural Day celebrated on June 27Chandak Group has unveiled one of Mumbai’s highest vertical murals across its Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) redevelopment project in Borivali East; a monumental artwork that brings together art, architecture and social transformation while celebrating the power of public art to inspire communities.

Spread across approximately 15,000 sq. ft., the mural rises dramatically from the 13th floor to the 34th floor of the SRA tower, making it one of the tallest vertical murals created on a rehabilitation building in Mumbai. More than a visual landmark, the mural stands as a symbolic representation of dignity, belonging and the aspirations of families transitioning into formal housing.

The artwork was conceptualized and created by renowned creative art studio ZA Works, with a dedicated team of 16 artists and technicians working over 270 hours to bring the massive installation to life. The mural depicts a young girl holding a golden key while standing before a keyhole-shaped portal opening into a vibrant world filled with flowers, butterflies and open skies. The imagery captures the emotional transition from uncertainty to stability; symbolizing the life-changing moment when a family receives the keys to their own home.

Speaking on the initiative, a spokesperson from Chandak Group said, “Redevelopment is not merely about constructing buildings; it is about transforming lives and restoring dignity. Through this mural, we wanted to create a visual symbol of hope for every family aspiring for a better future. The artwork reflects the emotional significance of receiving a home, a moment that changes generations. We wanted to go a step further by beautifying the building as well, so that residents feel a sense of pride every time they look at their home. We believe this mural will stand not only as a landmark in Mumbai’s skyline but also as a reminder that every family deserves the security, identity and pride of homeownership.”

Commenting on the creative vision behind the artwork, a spokesperson from ZA Works said, “This mural was envisioned as more than a large-scale artwork; it is a story of possibility, transformation and hope. Bringing together multiple surfaces across such a significant height into one cohesive visual narrative was both a creative and technical challenge. At its centre is a young girl holding a key before a keyhole opening into a world of opportunity, symbolizing the journey of families stepping into a new chapter of life. What made this project especially meaningful was the opportunity to create something that goes beyond aesthetics; an artwork that contributes to the identity of an entire community. We hope it serves not only as a landmark on Mumbai’s skyline, but also as a reminder that meaningful change is built one step at a time.”

The unveiling ahead of National Mural Day highlights the growing role of public art in shaping urban environments and fostering community identity. By choosing an SRA rehabilitation building as its canvas, Chandak Group has brought a powerful social narrative to the forefront of Mumbai’s redevelopment landscape. At a time when urban transformation is often discussed primarily in terms of infrastructure and real estate value, the initiative humanizes redevelopment by placing community aspirations and emotional upliftment at the centre of the conversation.

The mural is expected to emerge as a prominent visual landmark within the city’s redevelopment ecosystem, while also amplifying conversations around inclusive urban growth, community upliftment and the evolving role of public art in modern real estate developments.

For 40 years, Chandak Group has championed quality housing as a right, emerging as one of Mumbai’s trusted names in the SRA segment. In the last three years alone, Chandak Group has constructed over 80 lakh sq. ft. (8 million sq. ft.) of development across Mumbai’s key micro-markets, including Worli, Wadala, Chembur, Goregaon and Dahisar. During this period, the company handed over 7,616 homes, of which 3,500 were SRA rehabilitation units. Building on this momentum, the company is set to deliver an additional 1,508 rehabilitation homes in the coming year, with a robust pipeline of over 3,000 SRA units under various stages of development.

Through its redevelopment initiatives, Chandak Group is redefining rehabilitation housing, delivering homes built to high-quality standards while restoring dignity, security and an improved quality of life for thousands of families across the city.
