Thiruvananthapuram, June 25: Doctors at KIMSHEALTH successfully treated a 51 -year-old patient from Maldives diagnosed with a renal tumor using cryoablation. The minimally invasive procedure also known as  ‘Freeze Technology‘, destroys the abnormal tissues and tumors through the application of extreme cold.  This case highlights the shifting landscape of modern medical management, towards less invasive treatment options.

The patient who underwent a CT scan elsewhere for evaluation of abdominal pain, revealed a 2 cm tumor in the right kidney, was referred to KIMSHEALTH for further management. Usually, such tumors are removed surgically, but, given his significant cardiac co-morbidities, surgical removal of the tumor posed a highrisk option. After carefully evaluating the patient’s condition, the medical team led by Dr. Manish Kumar Yadav, Senior Consultant, Neuro Interventional Radiology, KIMSHEALTH, opted to perform cryoablation, as the safest and most effective alternative.

During the procedure, specialized needles were precisely placed into the tumor under image guidance. Argon gas was then circulated through these needles, to reduce the temperature within the tumor to sub-freezing levels, thereby creating an ‘ice ball’ around the lesion, to destroy the tumor cells, while preserving the surrounding healthy kidney tissue. “The success of this procedure underscores the growing importance of organ-preserving and minimally invasive treatment methodology. Through cryoablation, we were able to effectively treat the tumor while preserving the kidney and its functions, ensuring a faster recovery for the patient,” said Dr. Yadav.

The patient was discharged after three days of hospital stay and is now back to his normal routine. Dr. Santhosh Joseph, Senior Consultant, Neuro Interventional Radiology and  Dr. Sarath Surendran, Associate Consultant, Neuro Anesthesia were also part of the hour long procedure.
