Berhampur, May 25 (BNP): A violent attack on a youth in Ambika Nagar area of Berhampur has sparked concern after a video of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting swift police action against the accused.
According to police, a youth identified as Jaga Sahu was allegedly chased and attacked with a sharp weapon in broad daylight, triggering panic in the locality. The incident reportedly came to wider attention after visuals of the assault went viral within hours, drawing sharp public reactions online.
Acting on the matter, police launched an operation to trace the accused, who had allegedly fled the scene after the attack. During an attempted interception, officials said the suspect allegedly tried to escape and reportedly attempted to hurl a bomb at police personnel, following which police opened fire.
Police sources said the accused sustained bullet injuries to both legs during the operation and was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital for treatment. His condition is stated to be serious.
Authorities said the prompt response helped prevent further escalation of tension in the area. Police have appealed to the public not to circulate unverified information or rumours related to the case, adding that an investigation into both the attack and the police firing is underway.
The incident has once again raised concerns over rising violent crimes in Berhampur and the growing role of social media in rapidly amplifying local law-and-order incidents.
