Stock Market LIVE Updates: January 13, 2025 – Indian Equities Slide Amid Global Concerns
Indian benchmark indices, BSE Sensex and Nifty50, opened sharply lower on Monday, weighed down by adverse global cues and rising investor concerns.
At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex plummeted by 800.29 points, or 1.03%, to 76,578.62, while the Nifty50 fell 218.40 points, or 0.93%, to 23,213.10.
Performance Highlights

Nifty Gainers and Losers: On the Nifty50, five stocks managed to stay positive, led by IndusInd Bank (+2.27%), Shriram Finance, HCLTech, Britannia Industries, and Maruti Suzuki India. On the downside, BPCL (-2.03%) was the top loser, followed by Apollo Hospitals, Mahindra & Mahindra, SBI Life, and BEL.
Sectoral and Broader Market Performance
Sectoral Indices: All sectoral indices were in the red, with the Realty index posting the steepest decline of 2.42%. Other sectors under significant pressure included Consumer Durables, Healthcare, Metal, Auto, Oil, PSU Bank, and Pharma, all down over 1%. The Bank, Financial Services, IT, and FMCG indices also recorded notable declines.
Broader Markets: Broader indices mirrored the weakness, as the Nifty Midcap 100 shed 1.46%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 slipped 1.36%.
Volatility Index: The India VIX surged 6.78% to 15.93, indicating heightened market uncertainty.
Global Context
The bearish sentiment in Indian markets aligns with global trends, as stronger-than-expected US payroll data released on Friday weighed on Wall Street indices. The data also drove Treasury yields higher, dampening hopes of an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve in the near term.
With global headwinds and domestic concerns, Indian markets are likely to remain under pressure throughout the day.
