Harrisburg, Pa., Apr 03: Harrisburg University of Science and Technology (HU), in collaboration with Select Medical, has officially welcomed the inaugural cohort of its newly launched Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. The program, now integrated into the Select Medical Institute for Physical Therapy and Movement, has enrolled its first class of 52 students representing 12 U.S. states and diverse professional and personal backgrounds.

Although the cohort began coursework in January, students recently arrived on campus for their first week-long lab immersion, marking a significant milestone in the hybrid program that combines online learning with hands-on clinical training and collaborative research.

To commemorate the occasion, HU and Select Medical hosted a welcome breakfast and kickoff ceremony featuring remarks from institutional leaders.

“This institute is a declaration,” said Dave Schankweiler, Interim President of Harrisburg University. “It reflects a shared vision to shape the future of physical therapy education through collaboration between academia and healthcare practitioners. Each student here will go on to transform lives through their work.”

John Saich, President of Select Medical, emphasized the partnership’s mission-driven approach. “Our collaboration is grounded in values such as innovation, integrity, and accountability. Together, we’ve designed a program that prepares students for impactful careers in movement science and rehabilitative care.”

The DPT program represents a significant milestone for the university, according to Kevin Purcell, Ph.D., Provost at HU.

“This is a watershed moment for our institution and a testament to our commitment to advancing healthcare education and serving both regional and national needs.”

Program Lead Tonya Miller, PT, DPT, Ph.D., encouraged students to embrace curiosity, grit, and joy as guiding principles throughout their academic journey. “We are not just beginning a program—we are building a community that will shape the future of physical therapy,” she said.

The inaugural Class of 2028 reflects a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, with participants ranging from physical therapy assistants and athletic trainers to fitness professionals and recent graduates. The cohort has an average age of 33 and an equal gender distribution.

This new program aligns with Harrisburg University’s mission to deliver workforce-ready education in high-impact fields. By combining advanced scientific training with practical application, the initiative aims to prepare graduates to play a vital role in patient recovery and long-term healthcare outcomes.

As the first cohort progresses toward graduation in 2028, they are set to establish the benchmark for future students and contribute meaningfully to the evolving field of physical therapy.
