
Roorkee, Uttarakhand | 26 March, 2026 – The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee marked another milestone in its journey toward sustainable energy and modern infrastructure with the inauguration of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) facility at its Roorkee campus on March 25, 2026. The project is being executed by HNGPL, a joint venture of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and GAIL Gas Limited.
Phase I of the PNG project, including the De-Compression Unit was inaugurated by Prof. Kamal Kishore Pant, Hon’ble Director (IIT Roorkee) and Shri Rahul Tandon, Business Head (BPCL – Gas). The event was attended by Prof. U.P. Singh, Deputy Director (IIT Roorkee), Shri Vivek Vohra, CEO (HNGPL), Shri Naveen Kumar, CFO (HNGPL) along with other officials from HNGPL and IIT Roorkee.
As part of the initiative, over 15,000 meters of MDPE pipeline have already been laid. The project includes the extension of PNG facility to 14 Hostel’s Mess facilities and around 1500 residences across the campus. The HNGPL team, in collaboration with the Institute Works Department (IWD) of IIT Roorkee, is working to extend PNG connections to every kitchen on campus.
This project aligns with the Government of India’s vision to promote PNG as a cleaner, safer and more reliable energy source. The new facilities are expected to enhance convenience for residents and students while contributing to reduced carbon emissions and supporting India’s transition to sustainable energy solutions.
