Safe Delivery for Pregnant Woman with Rare Bleeding Disorder

Hyderabad, Mar 20: Doctors at Kamineni HospitalsLB Nagar, under the Mbrace Mother Care, Child Care & Fertility, successfully conducted a safe delivery for a pregnant woman suffering from a rare bleeding disorder, saving the lives of both mother and child. Dr. B. Menaka, senior consultant from the Mbrace – Obstetrics and Gynecology department, explained that such disorders are seen in about one in every hundred individuals in the general population, but are extremely rare during pregnancy. She shared details about the condition, symptoms, precautions taken, and treatment provided in this case.

The patient, Sangeetha (27), wife of a car driver from Chityal in Nalgonda district, had visited the Mbrace outpatient department four years ago with complaints of excessive bleeding. After evaluation, she was diagnosed with Von Willebrand Disease – Type 3, a rare inherited genetic disorder that causes abnormal bleeding. She was treated with appropriate medications at that time. A few months ago, during her first pregnancy, she approached the hospital again at five months’ gestation and continued under regular medical supervision. However, her condition became more complicated due to central placenta previa, where the placenta is positioned low in the uterus, increasing the risk. “Though we planned a scheduled Caesarean section considering the high-risk condition, sudden bleeding occurred earlier, and an emergency C-section had to be performed,” Dr. Menaka said.

A healthy male baby weighing 2.24 kg was delivered. The mother was treated with blood transfusions along with Von Willebrand factor and Factor VIII medications. A multidisciplinary team comprising obstetricians, hematologists, anesthesiologists, transfusion medicine specialists, and pediatricians worked together to ensure a safe delivery. Both mother and baby recovered well and were discharged.

Dr. Menaka stated that this inherited genetic disorder is extremely rare, with Type 3 occurring in one in 5 million people, and this is the first such pregnancy case she has encountered in her 25-year career. She added that symptoms include excessive bleeding, prolonged bleeding after injuries, oral bleeding, and high risk during surgeries. She also noted that the patient being enrolled in the Hemophilia Society helped in easier access to treatment.
