The University of Western Australia Launches “Hack for Impact 2026,” a Global Innovation Challenge Connecting India and Australia

Mumbai, Mar 07: The University of Western Australia (UWA), in collaboration with the Indo‑Australian Chamber of Commerce (AustCham India), Perdaman, and Invest and Trade Western Australia, has announced the launch of Hack for Impact 2026, a five-day global online innovation challenge designed to bring together students from India and Australia to solve real-world industry problems.

The initiative reflects UWA’s expanding engagement with India and coincides with the university’s plans to establish two new branch campuses in Mumbai and Chennai in 2026 — marking the institution’s first international campus expansion.

A Platform for Cross-Border Innovation

Hack for Impact 2026 aims to create a high-impact, industry-led innovation platform where students collaborate across borders in multidisciplinary teams. Participants will tackle real-world challenges presented by UWA’s industry and business partners, developing solutions that are practical, scalable, and market-ready.

The challenge will focus on emerging sectors shaping the future, including:

  • Cybersecurity

  • Artificial Intelligence and Technology

  • Energy

  • Education

  • Agriculture

  • Tourism

  • Sports

Participants will be encouraged to develop solutions that move beyond theoretical ideas toward practical implementation, evaluated on desirability, feasibility, and viability.

Fully Virtual Global Hackathon

The programme will be conducted entirely online, allowing participation from students across multiple geographies.

Key dates include:

  • Registrations close: 6 April 2026

  • Mandatory information session: 8 April 2026

  • Hackathon dates: 9–13 April 2026

The challenge will require approximately 13–15 hours of participation over five days.

The programme will include:

  • A live launch event

  • Daily mentor sessions with industry experts from India and Western Australia

  • Dedicated team collaboration time

  • A Shark Tank–style Grand Final, where shortlisted teams will pitch their solutions to an expert jury.

Participants will compete for a total prize pool of USD 20,000 (approximately INR 12.5 lakh). In addition to prize money, participants will gain:

  • Direct industry mentoring

  • Certificates of participation

  • Post-hackathon support

  • Practical experience in international collaboration and innovation.

The challenge is open to students from all academic disciplines, and no prior hackathon experience is required, making it accessible to both first-time participants and experienced innovators.

To participate, students must complete the online registration form, attend the mandatory information session, sign the participation agreement, and join the live launch event.
