New Delhi, Mar 05: Renowned Indian author and public intellectual Gurcharan Das has been awarded the Lifetime Libertarian Award, a prestigious global honour recognizing individuals whose ideas and leadership have significantly advanced the cause of liberty worldwide. The award will be presented at the 40th Liberty International World Conference 2026, scheduled to take place from August 7–9, 2026, in Kathmandu, Nepal.

With this recognition, Das becomes the first Indian recipient of the Lifetime Libertarian Award since it was introduced as a distinct global honour in 2024. The award celebrates individuals whose intellectual contributions and leadership have helped promote the principles of freedom and a free society.

The recognition highlights Das’s enduring contribution to public discourse on India’s economic evolution, as well as his role in shaping conversations around reform, ethics, enterprise, and governance over the past three decades.

Founded in 1969, Liberty International is a U.S.-based nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing freedom through education and leadership development across more than 100 countries. In announcing the honour, the organization praised Das for his “extraordinary contributions to the cause of liberty and his lifelong commitment to the principles of a free society.”

Das is widely known for his bestselling books, including India Unbound, which chronicles India’s economic transformation, along with The Difficulty of Being Good, Another Sort of Freedom, and The Dilemma of the Indian Liberal. His writings explore the intersections of morality, economic reform, and India’s role in a rapidly changing global landscape.

Reacting to the recognition, Das said,

“I feel honoured. Imagine, to be rewarded for what you believe in your bones — what a stroke of luck!”

Before dedicating himself to writing full-time, Das served as CEO of Procter & Gamble India and later as Managing Director for Strategic Planning at Procter & Gamble Worldwide. A graduate of Harvard University, he was later honoured with Phi Beta Kappa for his academic achievements in liberal scholarship.

For more than two decades, Das has also been associated with the Centre for Civil Society, contributing to initiatives focused on education reform and livelihood development.

In addition to receiving the award, Das will deliver a keynote address at the conference, engaging with an international audience of scholars, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders from over 40 countries.

This global recognition highlights the growing international appreciation for Indian scholarship and ideas in shaping discussions on economic development, governance, and societal progress.
