Feb 26: Yatharth Hospital, Sector 110, Noida, successfully saved the life of a 64-year-old patient by performing a laparoscopic surgery for a rare and serious condition—Gastric Volvulus with Hiatus Hernia. The patient was brought to the hospital in an emergency with complaints of severe abdominal pain and blood in vomit. Upon evaluation, doctors found that the patient’s stomach had twisted around its axis and shifted from its normal position into the chest cavity, causing obstruction in the digestive system.

After thorough assessment, the patient was immediately taken up for emergency surgery. The procedure was performed using the keyhole (laparoscopic) method, eliminating the need for a large incision. The patient recovered well post-surgery, started a liquid diet the very next day, and was discharged from the hospital within two days.

Sharing details, Dr. Manoj Gupta, Senior Director and Head of Department – Robotic and Laparoscopic GI Surgery, GI Oncology, and Liver Transplant at Yatharth Hospital Noida 110, said, “Gastric Volvulus with Hiatus Hernia is an extremely critical condition in which the stomach twists abnormally. If not treated in time, it can lead to interruption of blood supply, stomach perforation, or severe internal bleeding. Timely surgical intervention ensured the patient’s safety and a smooth recovery.”

Dr. Alok Dubey, Consultant – Robotic and Laparoscopic GI Surgery and Liver Transplant at Yatharth Hospital Noida 110, added,

“Incorporating Nissen Fundoplication during the surgery helps prevent future reflux symptoms and significantly reduces the chances of recurrence.” Had the surgery been delayed, the patient’s condition could have turned life-threatening.”

According to doctors, while hiatus hernia is relatively common in India, gastric volvulus associated with it is extremely rare and potentially fatal. The condition can cause obstruction, vomiting, severe pain, and compromised blood supply. In such cases, prompt diagnosis and advanced laparoscopic surgery at a specialised centre prove to be life-saving.

This achievement reflects Yatharth Hospital’s continued commitment to bringing advanced, patient-centric, and minimally invasive treatments to the region. By adopting cutting-edge technologies, we aim to ensure safer procedures, faster recovery, and a better quality of life for our patient.
