Noida, Feb 26: A 27-year-old man who suffered a catastrophic abdominal injury in a chainsaw accident was saved through a timely and complex emergency surgery at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital Noida Extension. The patient arrived in critical condition after the moving chainsaw tore through his abdominal wall, leaving a large portion of his small intestine exposed. Prompt surgical intervention and synchronised teamwork helped save his life.
The young man had climbed a tree and was cutting branches using a chainsaw. He suddenly lost balance, and the running chainsaw struck his abdomen. The injury was so severe that the abdominal wall tore open and a large portion of the small intestine protruded outside the body. People nearby rushed him to the hospital immediately.
Critical condition, time was crucial
When brought to the emergency department, the patient’s condition was extremely serious. Heavy blood loss and an open abdominal wound posed a high risk of infection. The medical team decided to proceed with immediate surgery without losing precious time.
During the operation, doctors discovered that the small intestine was torn at three different locations. The damaged sections were removed, and the intestine was surgically reconnected. In addition, multiple deep cuts were found in the mesentery — the membrane that supplies blood to the intestine — which were carefully repaired to control bleeding. The complex procedure lasted nearly three hours.
Surgery led by expert team
The operation was led by Dr. Kapil Kochhar, Director, Minimal Access, Bariatric, Robotic & General Surgery at Yatharth Super Speciality Hospital, Noida Extension. He said, “In such cases, every minute is critical. Teamwork, rapid decision-making, and surgical precision play a decisive role in saving a patient’s life. Even a slight delay could have led to a very different outcome.”
Walking home on the ninth day without the need for a wheelchair
After surgery, the patient was kept under observation in the Surgical ICU for one day. Within 48 hours, he was shifted to the general ward. Special attention was given to infection prevention and nutritional support. Most reassuringly, on the ninth day, the patient walked out of the hospital on his own feet — without a wheelchair — and returned home.
This case highlights how advanced medical infrastructure, an experienced surgical team, and timely intervention can save lives even in situations that appear almost impossible.
